God is love. (Analogy about the solar eclipse below.) This is one of our favorite verses in the Bible. So much so that it was read on our wedding day. Here’s the full verse: “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” -1 John 4:16-21 So many times I try to love out of my own strength and wisdom and fall short. But when allow God’s love to live in me and let that love shine, that’s when real stuff happens. I’m obsessed with analogies, because I think God reveals Himself through the things He has made in many different ways. Here’s one based on this scripture and todays solar eclipse: Just as the moon has no light of it’s own to make it shine, but we see the light based on the sun, so we too need the Son’s (God’s son, Jesus) light to reflect off of us, in order for the world to see light and love. When we stand in front of God, and make ourselves more visible than Him, we block the light, love and vision of people we encounter (just as the sun was blocked by the moon today).
