Teach Us To Number Our Days

love flatlay

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. -Psalm 90:12 Do you remember those Pez candies? They were my favorite. I loved the little toy you put the candy into and the candy would stick out of the toy’s mouth so you could eat a Pez. Every single time as a kid I remember being shocked when there was no candy left. Those Pez candies remind me of this scripture, and I’ve been thinking about that verse a lot lately. Life is so precious and fleeting. My husband sent me a news article this morning that made me think of this scripture even more. Last night I was out to dinner with one of my friends at one restaurant where we live and Caleb at another place with a friend. There was an explosive devise thrown into another restaurant close by (we went to just last week) thanks to God no one was hurt. But it made me think, we never know what day will be our last. I believe that I will be with Jesus in Heaven forever, and so I try to focus on the question, what will last to eternity? If it doesn’t matter there, I shouldn't waste my time worrying about it here. The haters won’t matter in Heaven, worrying about money or possessions won’t matter. Status and looks won’t matter. It’s the kindness and love we show others, the way we serve others, feeding the hungry, caring for the lonely and needy loving the people God puts in front of us, the way we love God. Those are the things that last. Like Jack said in the movie Titanic “I figure life’s a gift… make every day count.” Let’s look people in the eye today and this weekend, be slower to spread anger and hate and more quick to show grace and love. Let’s stop making assumptions about what others think of us and see other’s with pure eyes. We all are fighting battles, we all our broken in certain ways, each human is made in God’s image and there’s still a change for each of us on this earth. Cherish our loved ones. Let’s speak blessings not curses over others (even those we don’t know). Let God be the judge, that job is too burdensome for us. Let’s choose thankfulness, joy and peace today. What do you think?
